Elected regional body wanted by Mayors By DAVID HILL North Canterbury’s Mayors want a fully elected regional council restored by 2019 at the latest. Responding to the Government’s proposal of a mixedmodel governance structure for Environment Canterbury (ECan) announced last week, the Mayors say restoring a democratic elected regional council remains a priority. Environment Minister Dr

Nick Smith and Associate Local Government Minister Louise Upston proposed a model to take effect in time for the 2016 local body elections for a regional council with seven elected councillors and six appointed. The proposal is out for public consultation, with submissions closing on May 1. It has been challenged by Hurunui Mayor Winton Dalley who asked the ministers why the option of a fully elected regional council is not being

offered now. ‘‘I did challenge the minister why there wasn’t an option of a fully elected council and I then challenged him to ensure the public was fully informed why it was not an option.’’ ‘‘The recommendation is not surprising as they are consistent with the comments the Minister (Dr Smith) has expressed over a long period. They have a belief that the Canterbury Water Managment Strategy has not been completed and I expect they

would have wanted the plan embedded by now.’’ Dr Smith has since issued a press release saying the proposal allows for a majority of elected representatives while ensuring continued momentum on the Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS) and earthquake recovery work with appointed representatives remaining on board. Waimakariri Mayor David Ayers and Kaikoura Mayor Winston Gray say they accept

the proposal on the condition a fully elected ECan is restored in 2019. ‘‘This is OK for three years, but we need to get back to a fully elected council by 2019,’’ Mr Ayers says. ‘‘I would like to see some investigation into subregional committees, perhaps enhanced zone committees with some elected members. There needs to be a strong local voice in the way ECan formulates local policy.’’ Continued Page 2

Kaikoura Cheese has golden glow Kaikoura Cheese ticks all the boxes, says cheesemaker Daniel Jenkins. Daniel, his wife Sarah and children Pipi and Coya, see their fledging business as a connection to the land and creating a food product that benefits those around them and helps boost the local economy. Housed today in central Kaikoura in what was Harnetts Butchery, they share their business with tourists and locals who can come in and taste cheeses and see it being made. ‘‘It is visual and open,’’ says Daniel who says the business ‘‘ticks so many boxes’’ for the couple who love the lifestyle. Canterbury and Marlborough are the catchments for Kaikoura Cheese. ‘‘We try not to sell outside of those regions. We are very much trying to do the whole local thing.’’ But while the couple are keen to keep their product local, it is making a hit nationally. It entered six cheeses in the New Zealand Champions of Cheese Awards and took home a championship award, three gold and two silver medals. Around 450 to 500 cheeses

It won the Ministry of Primary Industries Champion New Cheese Award with its Tenara cheese, which also won gold along with Fromage Blanc in the Langham Champion

which is 30 to 40 days old. ‘‘It is quite a soft cheese and a very full cheese,’’ he says. Their Harnett cheese, a wash rhine camembert, is named after the Butchery business which had served Kaikoura for over 100 years. ‘‘It was really nice to get so many medals. The business is heads down and bottoms up working flat out and little rewards count for a lot,’’ says Daniel. The business was established in 2010 borne out of a passion for excellent, top quality wholefood. The main aim was to have a happy family with a good balance of health and fun. They lived in a tiny house built on family property north of Kaikoura and added a small factory. A herd of goats provided them with milk for the cheese and they brought in cows milk from a neighbouring property. Daniel says the family has since moved into a ‘‘normal’’ house and the factory is now established in Kaikoura due to the growth of the business. ‘‘People now get to see where their food comes from and they can talk to the cheese maker and producers.’’ What hasn’t changed is it remains a local product made from local products produced on the land.

The oldest of the three, Thomas Pinkham, 18, is ‘‘quite a big fan of Shakespeare’’. He’s looking forward to seeing Shakespeare’s Globe theatre in London, while in Europe later this year. It’s a reconstruction of the original theatre designed in 1599. ‘‘Apparently it’s very faithful to the original,’’ Thomas said. He enjoys acting, but is not sure if it will be a career for him. ‘‘It was a good opportunity to be in a meaningful play,’’ he said. Mr Wilson said ANZAC was

play, which has a cast of 7. ‘‘These young actors are all excellent and are a real credit to their school drama department,’’ Mr Wilson said. Although all three show considerable thespian talent, only Liam, aged 16, has definite plans to be an actor when he leaves school. He has already been involved in many school productions. ‘‘I love acting. It’s something I really enjoy,’’ he said. ‘‘It gives me a chance to entertain people.’’ Tuomas also enjoys the performing arts. ‘‘It was great becoming involved with ANZAC,’’ he said. John Broughton’s powerful play ANZAC will be brought to life in the Rangiora Town Hall next month. The Dunedin playwright and Otago University lecturer’s antiwar homage has been chosen by the Rangiora Players to showcase their return to the recently reopened town hall and theatre complex. The play will open on Wednesday, April 22. There will be four night shows in the season, including an Anzac Day performance to recognise New Zealand’s involvement in World War 1 and commemorate the centenary of the Gallipoli campaign on April 25, 1915. Two matinee performances will also be held, including a free show for high schools on April 22. The other matinee session is on the afternoon of Saturday, April 25. ‘‘The Rangiora Players chose ANZAC for their return performance as a tribute to the soldiers who fought during the war, and to their families, who were left at home awaiting news of loved ones,’’ Roger Kirkwood, spokesman for the Rangiora Players, said. The play takes place at Dunedin Railway Station during December 1917 where two sisters, Gladys and Violet, are waiting to welcome their soldier brother, John, home from the war front. It examines a soldier’s perspective of the war, and New Zealand’s prevailing attitudes, from naive enthusiasm to the eventual realisation of the horrors of war. ANZAC will be directed by Graham Wilson, who moved to North Canterbury last year, after many years working in the performing arts in Dunedin. Two students from Kaiapoi High School, Liam Gilmore and Tuomas Tuhaka, and a former student, Thomas Pinkham, who is now on a gap year, have leading roles in the

Plea goes out for help for Vanuatuan families A plea has gone out from InspireChurchAmberley for clothing and other goods to send to Vanuatu following Cyclone Pam. InspireChurch, which holds services in the Amberley Domain hall, is the church home of Vanuatuan vineyard workers from both Camshorn and Waiata Vineyards. Lead pastors Garry and Lola Love say the workers are devastated as they head home. ‘‘But they are ready to face the storm,’’ they say. Meanwhile the next team of workers have had to leave their families to come to work here. ‘‘We have a great relationship with their managers and know that the guys are in very good hands,’’ say the Loves. ‘‘We also know that there are things that we as a community can do for these

Collection day changes for rubbish and recycling

Chatham Island residents had the support of a Hurunui District Council officer as Tropical Cyclone Pam bore down on them. Allan Grigg, council’s emergency management officer, flew out for the Chatham Islands early last Monday morning alongside two other Canterbury civil defence staff before Cyclone Pam hit. After Topical Cyclone Pam passed the Chatham’s the group’s main focus was assisting with an island wide Impact Assessment which will gather important information for the recovery stage. Mr Grigg returned home this week. Hurunui chief executive officer Hamish Dobbie says providing support to the Chatham Islands is a valuable learning tool for council staff who can learn from Mr Griggs experience. ‘‘It gives an important boost to those already on the ground and is a great example of rural communities helping each other out. ‘‘We really appreciate Allan being so willing to head there to help out.’’

West Eyreton’s World War One memorial archway has been restored in time for the Anzac Day centennial. The archway of brick and red stone, which was built in 1922 in front of the West Eyreton Hall, was destroyed in the September 2010 earthquake. However it has been restored to its former glory, while the two iron gates are being dipped and painted ready for the unveiling on Anzac Day. West Eyreton Hall Committee chairman Kelvyn Scott says the project cost $170,000, paid for by grants from the Lotteries Commission and the Waimakariri District Council. He says the council provided several designs for the new archway ‘‘but we were very adamant we wanted it back the way it was’’. ‘‘When you think about how they built it back then, it lasted pretty well and modern technology has allowed us to keep the original design, but it has been engineered to last a lot longer.’’ A blessing and dedication will be led by the Cust / West Eyreton RSA at the West Eyreton memorial archway and gates at 11.45am, after its annual service at Cust at 10am. Light refreshments will follow in the hall, served by the West Eyreton School PTA. The West Eyreton soldiers’ memorial was unveiled on June 4, 1922, by the then Prime Minister William Massey. The archway and gates were previously repaired in 1978 due to wear and tear. At the end of the war, the West Eyreton soldiers were welcomed home by a celebration in the hall and the words ‘‘Cead Mille Failthea’’ are still printed on the wall to this day, which mean, in Gaelic, ‘‘a hundredthousand welcomes’’. Unlike other rural halls in the Waimakariri district, the West Eyreton Hall continues to be managed by a local committee. Committee member Angus Robertson says it is not known when the hall was first built, but the earliest surviving record dates back to about 1905. He says the hall has been extended to and rebuilt over the years, with the roof the only original part of the building still in tact. An extension added in 1991 was

Future of the Heartland Complex and challenging I applaud the initiative of Charles Wiffen and others in the farming sector that have been instrumental in organising The Future of the Heartland Forum to be held at Te Mania Angus Stud, Conway Flat, on April 17, 2015. Agriculture is the backbone of the New Zealand economy and I am sure that the range of topics covered, and the quality of presenters, will be of benefit to anyone interested in rural issues. Charles Wiffen is extremely excited about the programme. ‘‘There is no question that it is going to be a great day. There are huge opportunities out there for rural communities. ‘‘The big question for the sector is how we find ways to move forward and double our export earnings by 2025,’’ he asserts. Nathan Guy, the Minister for Primary Industries and senior politicians will be attending the forum along with a range of speakers from Federated Farmers, Environment Canterbury, the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce, local government, successful rural entrepreneurs and more. ‘‘The day really is an opportunity for

Dear Editor, While I agree with Michael Gousmet (letters 19/3/15) that depreciation funding is a flawed concept financially, ultimately something needs to be done to improve Hurunuis’s infrastructure. Whether you call that depreciation funding or replacement funding is only a matter of the level you set the contribution rate at or how much ratepayers pay. The problem in the Hurunui is historic underinvestment in infrastructure as a result of successive councils trying to keep rates as low as possible. This situation coupled with extreme weather events and population expansion means that this parsimony is now catching up with today’s ratepayers. Part of this historic problem has been the belief that business people automatically make good councillors when there is clearly a dislocation between

interaction between politicians, community leaders and those on the land,’’ says Charles. ‘‘The aim is to highlight ‘best practice’ and to explore new ideas that will ultimately benefit the whole country, not just the rural sector’’. The topics covered traverse a range of issues including: the role of government in supporting agriculture in the 21st Century; biosecurity incursions and their impact on farmers; sustainable farming practices that will deliver value added opportunities for New Zealand; the importance of agriculture to New Zealand’s economic future; the value of water storage and opportunities and challenges in establishing irrigation schemes and a local government perspective on issues facing farmers and the rural community. The Te Mania estate is an amazing venue and is worth visiting in its own right. The organisers are expecting several hundred farmers, and people interested in the rural sector, to attend the forum. I will definitely be there. I hope that plenty of others will join me.

Onethird of Hurunui’s budget is raised by Hanmer Springs which is a reserve and on which there are very tight legislative controls on the income it generates. It is pity that the revenue raised in Hanmer cannot be used more freely to support the district through which tourists travel in order to enjoy Hanmer’s facilities. This however, would need a radical overhaul of the Local Government Act but it looks as if Auckland may be pushing for more trading freedom. What’s good for the goose should be good for the gander? Hurunui landowners are currently grappling with two complex and challenging issues that are creating considerable tension between themselves, government policy, legislative requirements, the demands of organisations and agencies, and the New Zealand public at large. These issues result from statutory planning processes directed by the Resource Management Act (RMA) and government policies. Council has the responsibility of leading the community through these processes and Hurunui District Council has chosen to engage with the community by sitting around the table working collaboratively to find solutions. This gives all parties the opportunity to understand each others perspective, understand legal requirements, understand the ‘intent’ of policies, and collectively find solutions. This process gives the community the opportunity to have input into Proposed Plans, as opposed to the normal RMA process whereby Council in relative isolation from the community ‘Proposes’ the Plan. For anyone to then influence a Proposed Plan they need to submit in a very formal, expensive, and for some an intimidating process. While this formal RMA process will ultimately still occur, having the

opportunity to influence and shape a ‘Proposed Plan’ must be a more civilised and affordable approach, resulting in a plan more closely reflecting community aspirations, while at the same time addressing the issues that the Plan is intended to address. Protection of Natural Biodiversity is one of those issues, which I have written about previously, however there’s still some way to go to find a solution. At the heart of this debate is the RMA which provides for the identification and mapping of ‘Protected Areas’ on private land. This arbitrary regulatory approach alienates landowner goodwill and doesn’t protect against biodiversity loss and deterioration. It’s clear in this District that the best protected, restored, and managed areas of Biodiversity are those that the Landowner initiates, values, and has pride in. We have many outstanding examples of these. However, with a history of often indiscriminant and unnecessary destruction of native vegetation and natural habitats, many hold strong views that landowners cannot be trusted to protect what is left and that strong regulatory rules are required. Trust, cooperation and perseverance are required during this process if the best outcome for the environment and the community is to be realised.

By SHELLEY TOPP A photograph of a 1950 Fordson truck in The News recently took Woodend man Andy Childs on a trip down memory lane. The little grey truck is now owned by Brian Moir, of Rangiora, but used to be the property of the Rangiora Borough Council where Andy began work as an apprentice gardener when he was 16, in 1974. Back then they called the little truck ‘‘Lizzy’’. There were only ‘‘two or three people’’ working in the parks and reserves department at that time and they had to share the truck with ‘‘boss’’, said Mr Childs. However, after a brand new Mazda 1600 truck arrived at the council, the Fordson became Mr Childs’ work vehicle. He will never forget having to slam the truck into reverse and then plant his foot hard on the accelerator, flying along backwards to avoid a large piece of roofing frame that had ripped free during high winds and was heading straight for him. Mr Childs was unaware the Fordson

could go that fast in reverse, but he’s pleased she could as it gave him just enough time to narrowly avoid the flying debris during the big Canterbury storm of 1975 when winds peaked at 195kmph. Although Lizzy could be‘‘tricky to start at times’’ she was a real workhorse, he said, carting many big loads of garden rubbish, collected from the council parks and grounds, and heavy loads of soil during landscaping work. He was not too impressed, on his first day at work, Lizzy stalled and refused to go any further after a short drive out of the council yard. She had to be towed back to the garage and had the young council apprentice mechanic baffled for a while. However, it turned out a wire had come loose and once repaired she was quickly back in work. Mr Childs was pleased to see his old friend in such good order, perfectly restored by Mr Moir and still in use, but with a much more more sedentary life now. Although the truck had no motor or gearbox when Mr Moir bought her for $120, she starts first time now, testimony to his skill and attention to detail in bringing her back to life.

A classic spin on tour

By SHELLEY TOPP The North Canterbury Classic Car Tour took a spin around Northbrook Villas in Rangiora on Sunday morning before heading to Waikuku Beach for lunch. It was the 13th annual tour and was ‘‘open to all classic vehicles irrespective of year, body style or condition,’’ said the organiser Trevor Stanley, from Amberley. The tour began from Russley Road, in Christchurch, before heading to the Waimakariri area where the cars were greeted by hundreds of onlookers waving them on.

Then it was out to Clarkville, Mandeville, Ohoka and Southbrook before heading in to Rangiora for two laps around the Northbrook Villas oval. Next stop Waikuku Beach for a two hour lunch break in Oval Park. After lunch the tour continued through Ashley and Sefton, finishing up in Leithfield at the Castle Park Cafe. One hundred and twelve vehicles took part, Mr Stanley said. ‘‘Everything from two little early 50’s Renault 750’s right through the ages and sizes to the very latest Corvette,’’ he said.

Professor impressed A German professor was so impressed with Rangiora New Life School, she stayed for four weeks during a research visit to New Zealand. Professor Petra Freudenberger Lotz, who said farewell to the school last week, says she intended to visit several schools to compare the New Zealand school system with German schools, but she found ‘‘what I’ve dreamed for’’ at Rangiora New Life School with its Christian character. ‘‘I’ve never seen a school like this. The teachers here are so friendly and openminded. The most important thing here is the Christianity and it’s not only on paper, but in their hearts. It’s such a great atmosphere. ‘‘I interviewed the students and they told me that they feel welcome and supported. ‘‘They told me that every teacher does his / her best and they have so much fun and at the same time they learn a lot. ‘‘They said ‘every day I want to go to school’. ‘‘Not one student told me that ‘I’m no good at this school’ and that’s really unusual. I would have expected at least one or two of the students to say something bad about the school.’’ She says she also interviewed German exchange students studying at Rangiora New Life School, as well as some at other New Zealand schools, and their responses were the same. Unlike in New Zealand, religious studies is a compulsory subject in German secondary schools. Professor FreudenbergerLotz, who teaches religious studies at Kassel University to student teachers, has made a video about her time at Rangiora New Life School which she planned to screen in Germany this week at a refresher training workshop with 100 teachers. ‘‘It’s a big chance to learn something,

Tarantula startles By SHELLEY TOPP A giant tarantula startled some people at the Rangiora Harvest Day market in Victoria Park last Saturday. However, there was no cause for alarm. The hairy arachnid belonged to two boys, James Rose, aged 12, and his brother Matthew, 7, from West Eyreton. They bought the remotecontrolled toy at the market for $2 and were having a lot of fun with it ‘‘Some people jumped

when they saw it,’’ James said. ‘‘Others just walked around looking at it.’’ A small crowd enjoyed fine, warm weather at the market, which ran from 10am to 2pm. One of the busiest stalls belonged to Jeff Bell, a former Rangiora High School pupil, who is now a cartoonist and caricature artist. Wee Dram Farm’s animals, especially the ponies and baby rabbits, were also popular, as was the apple bobbing, and the Victoria Park playground.

When Diane learnt that the organisers of the Kaiapoi market were on the lookout for picnic tables, she offered to donate one. The first Kaiapoi Night Market was held on the vacant lot on the corner of Williams Street and Charles Street in Kaiapoi on March 12, between 5pm and 8pm. It is intended to be a regular event and will now be held every Thursday evening. Organiser of the first market night,

Linda Dunbar, a community development adviser for the Waimakariri District Council, was thrilled to learn about Diane’s donation. ‘‘We are really appreciative of her support,’’ she said. The opening night feedback from those attending the market had been fantastic, she said. Local singer Chris Firkin is set to perform in the first public concert in the newly reopened Oxford Town Hall. Chris will perform alongside fellow vocal artist Sarah Templeton and the Christchurch City Chorus in a concert in the town hall this Saturday (March 28) from 7pm. The concert is a fundraiser for the Arts in Oxford Gallery. ‘‘This concert has quite a bit of significance, being the first big live show in the Oxford Town Hall since it’s reopening and this is a good opportunity to come out and support a local performer and raise some money,’’ gallery founding director Brent Firkin says. ‘‘It will be a fantastic performance. ‘‘Sarah does some beautiful duets with Chris, so it will be a fabulous show.’’ Chris grew up in the Oxford area and now works as an itinerant music teacher at Oxford Area School. Brent says the Christchurch City Chorus, which is New Zealand’s number one ‘‘a capella harmony women’s chorus’’ and is internationally recognised, will perform a two hour show. He says the Arts in Oxford gallery has been going for five years and has been wellsupported by the local community and has received funding from the Canterbury Community Trust to help in its establishment. However, this funding can no longer be relied upon. ‘‘We have had a fantastic funding partner in the Canterbury Community Trust, but the demand for funding due to the earthquakes is huge, so our funding has been reduced. ‘‘We are a notforprofit organisation, so we operate quite

The terms of the agreement may affect the extent to which New Zealand may tax your lump sum. These agreements also determine whether you are able to claim a foreign tax credit in your New Zealand income tax return for foreign tax paid, or if you must apply for refund from the other country’s tax authority. If you have withdrawn or transferred a lump sum from a foreign superannuation scheme you may need to pay income tax on the amount. How it works depends on when the lump sum was withdrawn, and how you’ve accounted for your scheme in the past, but broadly speaking you have four years from the date you arrive in New Zealand to withdraw foreign super funds for it to be tax exempt. The fouryear lump sum exemption period generally applies to lump sums received on or after Apri1 1, 2014, if you have not previously had an exemption. The exemption period starts from the date you become a New Zealand citizen and runs until the end of 48 months. If you receive a lump sum a single payment paid to you directly or transferred to your New Zealand or Australian superannuation scheme within the first four years of becoming a New Zealand tax resident, no tax will have to be paid on the amount. A lump sum does not include a pension paid regularly to you from a foreign superannuation scheme which is generally taxed in full when received. In most cases, you will need to pay income tax on lump sums received after April 1, 2014, unless you qualify for the exemption. Advice from an accountant should be sought to calculate the tax. Cats lost and found An article about Tilly, a Burmese cat which has been missing from a Rangiora address since in early December, has prompted a flurry of emails and phone calls to The News. Several callers believe they may have sighted a cat similar to Tilly while others have emailed to say they have lost their cat. But for one person who emailed, there was a silver lining. She had no sooner emailed about Simba being missing from her Rangiora home for 10 weeks when she received a phone call which has led to Simba coming home to her family. Liz says their 10yearold gold pedigree Bengal cat which has distinctive black stripes and spots, seemed to have ‘‘vanished off the face of the earth’’. But he turned up 12 km from home. She says on Sunday morning she received a call from a man who said his sister had a cat that had been coming on to her property for the last week or so. Thinking it was her brother’s cat she had contacted him and he in turn contacted the owner after trolling through the lost pets section on Trade Me. ‘‘I would never have thought a cat would travel that far away that is nearly in Oxford,’’ says Liz. ‘‘Reading about Tilly in The News was like reading about our cat, but the

difference is we have ours back home. So Tilly’s owners shouldn’t give up hope. She well might be found. Unfortunately Karen is still searching for her wee Birman cat that went missing in September last year. She says it is a very similar tale to Tilly except there had been a call from a woman in Ohoka saying she had seen her on her lifestyle block. ‘‘It was totally out of the blue as we are miles and miles away in Rangiora Northbrook area. ‘‘We searched for months and searched all the surrounding areas and farms near where this Ohoka woman had seen her. ‘‘We had the local schools and vets and neighbours all looking but she vanished with no trace! We believe she was stolen as she was an expensive cat,’’ says Karen. Michelle, who lives in Freyberg Street, Rangiora is also still looking for her tabby cat, Missy, who went missing on January 19. ‘‘She was very much a loved family pet, she was very happy and attached to us. It seems odd that she has just vanished. I have also done all the door knocking, flyers, flyers at the vets, contacted the council, social media (facebook, cat care, pets on the net and trade me). ‘‘She is also microchipped. She has just vanished.’’

Final façade work to start outside Junction Hotel

Homeward bound The Southern Trekkers rolled into Amberley on Monday. The Trekkers had just completed the West Coast leg of their road trip to raise funds for Westpac Rescue helicopters in the South Island. They pulled up in town for a lunch stop as they began their journey down the east coast and home. Fifteen Trekkers left Invercargill on March 12 and will arrive home on March 28 after travelling 2100km. Iain Bulling says the trek has asked a fair bit of their ‘‘toys’’ which are parked in sheds for much of their life. However, most were managing to keep up with the pace. Only one had to stop on the West Coast for a bit while a crank shaft was fitted. It had since caught up with the trekkers.

Others had minor issues with water pumps and generators but in general it had been a fantastic trip to date. Mr Bulling says Southern Trekkers was formed after a trek led by his father a Child Cancer fundraiser. When the group decided to embark on a trek to the New Zealand Ploughing championships at Lincoln in Canterbury in 2013 it was decided they needed a name. Southern Trekkers was formed and aims to have Fun Runs to various vintage events and do treks for charitable causes, said Mr Bulling. Most of the members are associated with vintage clubs throughout Southland and South Otago, Thornbury Vintage Club, Te Anau, Central Southland, Edendale, Riversdale and Tapanui.

Work is about to start on final strengthening and securing work on the heritage façade at the site of the former Junction Hotel in Rangiora’s High Street. The area will be fenced to allow the work to be undertaken. This will mean that the footpath and car parking spaces will be closed between the Rangiora Pharmacy and Postie Plus from Monday 23 March 2015 until approximately 10 April 2015. Once the work is completed, the fencing will be removed and the temporary containers over the footpath will be permanently removed.

Bull riding at Easter weekend Bucking bulls will entertain at Hanmer Springs on Easter Saturday, April 4. The Hanmer Springs Bullride, where some of New Zealand’s top cowboys will endeavour to stay on board a bull for eight seconds, is being held at Lucas Lane, off Jacks Pass Road. The event, run by Duncan and Tina Mackintosh, is becoming a regular event on the calendar.

As well as running their own event, the couple have bought in and bred bulls which they hire out to rodeos at Methven, Canterbury and Richmond as well as using them for the 8second bullriding competition. The Oxford Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s 110th annual show has extra significance this year with Royal Event status. Executive officer Christine Roberts says ‘‘entries are up right across the board’’, with more than 5000 entries for the show on Easter Saturday, April 4, which has been granted Royal Event status by the Royal Agricultural Society (RAS). The first Oxford A&P Show, held in 1906, attracted 411 entries, while today’s showgrounds were first purchased by the association in 1907. Mrs Roberts says for this year’s show RAS medals and sashes will be presented in the fleece and home industries sections. They will be for the best fine wool and best strong wool entries, while in the home industries section they will recognise the best adult and best junior entries. Music and entertainment will be provided throughout the day, with local woman Nicky Fryer aka ‘‘the Music Fairy’’ taking centre stage. She will be joined by the Oxford Area School kapa haka group and Josh Grimaldi will perform a magic show. The entertainment area is being sponsored by Mainpower. President Guy Kelland says Nicky Fryer is wellknown to locals as the creator and writer of the Music Fairy Show and songs. She trained at the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art and worked as a music educator for many years. The ‘‘Paddock to Plate’’ demonstration is must see, Mr Kelland says, with local butcher Shane Frahm preparing pork provided by local producer Rockford County Pork, while Irish chef Steve McCulloch, who works at the Oxford Working Men’s Club, will show different ways to cook the pork, before serving it with wine provided by Straight 8 Estate Winery. ‘‘There’s a fair bit of banter between those two (Shane and Steve). They are both real local characters. Between the two of them there should be a bit going on, so it should be a lot of fun.’’ The dog trials section, which was first introduced in the mid1930s, is always a popular event, while the adrenaline pumping scurry racing and the motor bikes will provide plenty of action. Mrs Roberts says there will be something for everyone at this year’s show, with all ages catered for. Extra parking has been made available over the last few years in anticipation of extra visitors from Christchurch. ‘‘Three years ago a lot more people came out from Christchurch because of the earthquakes, so we are making sure there is plenty of parking available.’’ Entries are up in the sheep section, with three feature shows for the Perendale, Dorset Down and South Down breeds being held by the local Canterbury clubs. In the cattle section, the South Island Dexter Championship Show will be held.

Champion . . . The miniature and rare breeds champion, Woolstone Park Thunder and his handler Laura Reese, of Amberley, at last year’s show. Babies will be lining up in the ‘‘Baby Show’’, while two to fouryearolds will compete in the Miss Junior Oxford and Master Junior Oxford contests. Woodchopping, shearing and the popular terrier race will also provide plenty of action, while the stock and station horses will once again feature. Art and craft classes and highland dancing are other popular events. Grain and seed entries are also up, while more than 80 alpacas have been entered. Local classic and vintage car and machinery enthusiasts are also organising a vintage display, while the 2015 scurry racing championship final will be held in the main arena prior to the grand parade.

Local bragging rights between sheep breeders will carry a little extra emphasis at the Oxford Agricultural and Pastoral Show on Easter Saturday. President Guy Kelland says 72 fleeces have been entered for this year’s fleece section, which has Royal Event status with a Royal Agricultural Society medal and sash up for grabs for both the best fine wool and best strong wool entries. The best fleeces will also be lining up to be judged at the Golden Fleece competition, which is being hosted by the Oxford A&P Association on April 17. Mr Kelland says the fleeces lining up on Easter Saturday have mainly been entered by North Canterbury farmers

including former All Black Richard Loe, and the Heddell, Burrows and Bristow families. The fleece section is being sponsored by Wools of New Zealand. A new innovation being introduced by Mr Kelland for this year’s show is an agriart display of artworks made from old farm pieces. It will comprise of four entries which will be part of the home industries section in the GP Hall. ‘‘This year we are just doing a display and next year hopefully it will grow into a competition. They have it up at the National Field Days at Mystery Creek and there’s a few creative people out there who enjoy that sort of thing in their idle moments, so it should create a bit of interest.’’

Guy Kelland is looking forward to presiding over the 110th anniversary Oxford Agricultural and Pastoral Show on Easter Saturday, April 4. The 2015 show president and his wife Biddy have farmed a 29 hectare block breeding deer at Cooper’s Creek, near Oxford, for the past 11 years. Soon after settling in the area, Mr Kelland says a neighbour recruited him to join the Oxford A&P Association committee and he soon became involved in organising the fleece section. ‘‘It was a great way of meeting people because we were new to the area,’’ Mr Kelland recalls. Since becoming active at the Oxford show, Mr Kelland says he has developed a keen rivalry with local deer farmer Tim Bristow. ‘‘Oxford is the only show in New Zealand with classes for deer. ‘‘It’s interesting to have deer at the show for the city kids to have a look at.’’ Mr Kelland says the success of the show is down to a good committee and in particular secretary Christine Roberts. ‘‘There’s all the different sections and each one has someone running it and all

it just happens on the day. It’s a team effort, with each section organising their own judges and stewards and it all makes the job of president a bit easier. ‘‘They are a great crew and I can’t get over how supportive the community is. ‘‘Christine has been the secretary for a number of years and she’s absolutely amazing. We just couldn’t go without her. ‘‘I’m looking forward to it, but it will be great when it’s over.’’ While deer are his passion now, Mr Kelland says he grew up on a Merino sheep farm near Omarama in North Otago. He later farmed in partnership with his brother before the family farm was sold. His interesting in deer dates back to the days when he hunted in the hills around North Otago. Mr Kelland says the farming genes are continuing through his daughter, who is a farm advisor in Central Otago, while his son is a builder in Christchurch. Mrs Kelland works part time as a teacher at View Hill School, where she has taught art and has been instrumental in securing a display of artwork from students at the school.

Ivan Evans is thrilled with the sheep entries for this year’s Oxford Agricultural and Pastoral Show. Mr Evans has been organising the sheep section for 15 years and says the 320 entries for this year’s 110th annual show is up on recent years. ‘‘It’s terrific entries, it’s right up there with other shows. It’s not quite as many as the centennial show when we had 780 entries, but there’s very, very few sheep in the Oxford district now because of dairying. ‘‘Most of those exhibitors come from further afield and they keep coming back, so we must be doing something right.’’ This year’s sheep entries have been swelled by the hosting of three feature shows, for the Perendale, Dorset Down and South Down breeds, by the local Canterbury breed clubs, with exhibitors coming from as far north as Marlborough and as far south as Ashburton. Mr Evans says Shropshire sheep are also being showed at Oxford for the first time, with 14 entries received. This year a promising junior judge, Sam Hughes of Prebbleton, has been invited to judge the Poll Dorset classes.

so excited. ‘‘I think this is his first big show, but he’s very keen and that’s what you’ve got to encourage. The sheep industry is not as strong as it used to be, but it’s good to see younger people coming through and we’ve got to keep encouraging them.’’ Mr Evans says a Perendale breeder from Wyndham in Southland is making the trip up to judge the Perendales, while the other judges come from throughout Canterbury. A former sheep farmer, Mr Evans says sheep are very much a hobby for him now. He still runs a small Perendale stud on a lifestyle block near Oxford, although he continues to enjoy some success. Last year he won supreme champion fleece at a fleece competition held during Perendale New Zealand’s annual conference in Otago ‘‘which was a great thrill’’. He is also the Perendale and Cheviot breeds champion for the Canterbury A&P Association, with the role of promoting the breeds. ‘‘It’s a passion and I love doing it, and I love seeing people coming out and helping and enjoying doing it.’’

Mrs Pickering said that one of the trends she had noticed throughout her years at the show was that people were becoming more adventurous. ‘‘There is more variety in the entries.’’ ‘‘I think it is because in the past people were using produce from their own gardens,’’ she said. However, now they had access to a much wider variety of produce to work with and this was making entries far more interesting. Another trend she had noticed was that there had been a ‘‘steady decline’’ in the number of entries from children. ‘‘That’s a pity,’’ she said. Maybe this was due to the popularity of modern technology with young people. Children these days did not seem to have an interest in creating home produce. This year’s 110th annual Oxford show has been granted Royal Event status from the Royal Agricultural Society. It will be held at the Oxford Showgrounds on Easter Saturday, April 4.

Medals add flavour The Oxford Agricultural and Pastoral Show is celebrating 110 years this year and has been awarded Royal Event status by the Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand. This is particularly exciting news for Vivienne Garrett, convenor of the General Produce Hall which includes sections for fruit and vegetables, cooking, jams, jellies and preserves, homemade wines, homemade cheeses, handcrafts, hand knitting, homespun wools, woodcraft, jewellery and flowers. The show will be held at the Oxford Showgrounds on April 4 this Easter Saturday. Ms Garrett has been convener of the General Produce Hall for the last 10 years. ‘‘Entries continue to grow every year and this year is no exception,’’ she says. However, this year would be special because there will be ‘‘ribbons and two Royal medals awarded in the Home Industries section one for open classes and one for junior classes,’’ she says. Vegetables, woodcraft, jewellery, folk art and flowers can be entered on the morning of the show from 7.30am, but need to be staged before 9am when the hall will be closed for judging,’’ Ms Garrett says.

Golden Fleece at Oxford The Oxford Agricultural and Pastoral Association hosts the National Golden Fleece on April 17. For more than 40 years the Royal Agricultural and Pastoral Society of New Zealand has been holding the annual Golden Fleece competition to showcase New Zealand wool. Society members host the annual awards for two years at a time, with Otago and Taieri passing the mantle to Oxford this year. The competition is aimed at promoting highquality fleeces with entries closing for this year’s competition on April 7 and fleeces having to reach the association by April 10. The event at the showgrounds opens to the public at 3pm on April 17 with a fashion parade at 4.30pm. Awards and prizes will be presented at 5pm folowed by an evening function and guest speakers. Fleeces from all over the South Island are expected to compete in the 40 classes with $1000 on offer for the supreme fleeces in both the fine wool and strong wool sections. The Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association has posted a good financial result last year, in spite of the weather during its annual show. The association has released its annual report announcing results for the 2014 financial year which shows that attendance was slightly up at last year’s show with 103,000 visitors despite some poor weather on the Wednesday and Thursday. The 152nd annual show attracted 6682 livestock, equestrian and feature competition entries. The trade exhibitor section experienced its most successful year in the history of the show, with many exhibitors choosing to expand their

Southbrook, Sefton Win for Rga bowls to contest club final Southbrook and Sefton will contest the Canterbury Country Combined Cricket final on Sunday at Mainpower Oval. This means the final round robin fixtures this coming Saturday are largely irrelevant, as both finalists made their places secure in the weekend. It was an easy task for Sefton as its opponent South Malvern was unable to field a team. Southbrook matched up to Leeston / Southbridge, last season’s champions, which was in the game at 105/2 at drinks. That position declined rapidly to be all out for 166 to the unlikely wiles of Matt Brine who claimed five wickets. He then backed up his batting heroics of last week to lead his team to a conclusive victory, losing just two wickets. Prohibited Fire Season Cancelled Replaced by RESTRICTED FIRE SEASON

Ashley Rural Fire District Public Notice (this notice may be replaced anytime with a Prohibited Fire Season notice) RESTRICTED FIRE SEASON The Ashley Rural Fire Committee (ARFC) as Fire Authority of the Ashley Rural Fire District (ARFD) gives notice to the public that an all year Restricted Fire Season applies to all lands administered by ARFC, within the area described in the Schedule. In all areas administered by the ARFC, no fire within 400m of any Matariki Forest Estate boundary, or of a size greater than 40 cubic metres, shall be lit in any open air except pursuant to a written permit from a Rural Fire Officer. Lighting of open air fires is permitted within the restricted fire season provided the following conditions are complied with: 1. Contact the Fire Authority to obtain a verbal permit number prior to any lighting of open air fires on 0274 809279, or email nzpfire@xtra.co.nz. A Rural Fire Officer will determine whether the fire danger is either low or moderate. A written permit from a Rural Fire Officer will be required if the fire danger is determined to be higher. 2. the size of the fire is no greater than 40 cubic metres in volume 3. the location of the fire is to be no closer than 400m from any boundary of the Matariki Forest Estate 4. No fire shall be lit while a strong wind is blowing or when conditions are such that the fire is likely to spread beyond the area for which the authority was issued. Maximum allowable wind strength is 11kph (Beaufort 2, slight breeze) 5. Obtain a weather forecast (NZ Met Service, 0900 999 25 Canterbury Plains, or 0900 999 26 Canterbury High Country) 6. Notify occupiers of neighbouring properties likely to be affected by smoke drift 7. Any smoke produced from the fire must not pose a risk to road traffic 8. Any material being burnt must not pose an environ mental or health risk 9. The fire must be patrolled until it is completely out. PROVIDED THAT NO SUCH FIRES SHALL BE LIT WHEN HIGH OR GUSTY WINDS ARE PREVAILING, OR WHEN STRONG WINDS ARE FORECAST WITHIN 24HRS People seeking further information or wishing to obtain fire permits can contact the Fire Authority representative on 0274 809279, or email nzpfire@xtra.co.nz.
